The present walled garden covers 2.5 acres and dates back to 1850. In the second half of the 19th century, the Head Gardener had about 30 trained and apprentice gardeners.
The purpose of the garden was to supply Lord and
Lady Sefton with fruit and vegetables, including exotic peaches and grapes grown in the Peach House or against the heated flue walls.
Four historic glasshouses still contain plants originating from Liverpool's famous Botanical Garden, started by William Roscoe in 1802.
Several National Collections of plants are in the glasshouses.
Today, three long serving horticulturalists care for the glasshouse collection. The walled garden is used to give practical lessons to Myerscough College students.
